Chandigarh, August 3: Haryana has emerged as one of the country's top-performing states in the fight against tuberculosis, exceeding key National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP) targets through an aggressive case-finding strategy that screened more than 5.84 lakh people, detected 34,825 new TB patients, and pushed overall TB notifications beyond the national target. Reviewing the programme on Monday, Chief Secretary Sh. Anurag Rastogi directed officials to sustain the momentum while further strengthening preventive treatment and community-based screening to accelerate the state's march towards a TB-free Haryana.

 

The review revealed that Haryana notified 54,368 TB cases between January and July 2026 against the target of 52,500, achieving 104 per cent of the prescribed target. The state's performance was driven by strong participation from both government and private healthcare institutions, with public sector notifications reaching 101 per cent and private sector notifications touching 105 per cent of their respective targets.

 

Mission Director, National Health Mission, Dr. RS Dhillon informed that Haryana also surpassed its target for presumptive TB examinations by conducting 5,81,371 screenings, significantly higher than the target of 5.25 lakh, resulting in early diagnosis and timely treatment of thousands of patients across the state.

 

The 100-Day TB Elimination Campaign, launched on March 24, has emerged as the backbone of Haryana's intensified strategy. Under the campaign, health teams organised 4,711 screening camps, including 2,814 camps in identified high-risk villages, taking diagnostic facilities directly to vulnerable populations. The campaign resulted in 2.87 lakh chest X-rays and 1.70 lakh molecular NAAT tests, substantially expanding access to early and accurate diagnosis.

 

The review also highlighted encouraging treatment outcomes. Haryana recorded a 91 per cent treatment success rate, surpassing the national benchmark of 90 per cent. Nearly 97 per cent of notified TB patients were tested for HIV, while 94 per cent underwent diabetes screening, ensuring comprehensive clinical management.

 

State TB Officer Dr. Rajesh Raju informed that 24,813 household contacts of TB patients have already been provided TB Preventive Treatment (TPT), while 27,214 patients have received nutrition support kits under the Nikshay Mitra initiative, strengthening nutritional support and improving treatment adherence.

Technology is playing an increasingly important role in Haryana's TB elimination strategy. The TB Mukt Bharat App and Khushi Chatbot, launched during the campaign, have already registered 39,369 users, including 23,016 volunteers, 2,083 Nikshay Mitras, and 9,164 TB patients, creating a strong digital support network for patient monitoring and community participation.

 

Diagnostic capacity has also witnessed a significant boost. Haryana now has 22 District TB Centres, 168 TB Units, and 452 Designated Microscopy Centres, supported by 46 CBNAAT machines and 248 Truenat molecular testing systems, including 150 machines provided under BPCL Foundation's CSR initiative. Advanced drug-resistance testing is available through specialised laboratories at PGIMS Rohtak and IRL Karnal.

 

The meeting was informed that NAAT testing coverage has increased sharply from 42 per cent in March to 69 per cent by August 2, with four districts already crossing the 80 per cent benchmark, reflecting significant improvement in molecular diagnosis across the state.

 

To further strengthen community screening, the Government of India has sanctioned 200 handheld X-ray machines for Haryana. Thirty-six machines have already been installed and the remaining units will be deployed in phases. In addition, radiographers are being deployed across all 22 districts to maximise the use of portable X-ray technology during the ongoing 60-day intensive campaign.

Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi directed the Health Department to focus on achieving universal TB preventive treatment for eligible household contacts and ensure optimum utilisation of diagnostic infrastructure. He also stressed timely disbursal of benefits under the Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana.

 

The Chief Secretary said Haryana's strategy of combining aggressive screening, advanced diagnostics, digital technology, nutritional support and community participation has placed the state ahead of national targets and strengthened its campaign to eliminate tuberculosis.
