Chandigarh, October 1 — Haryana Health Minister Ms Arti Singh Rao said the state has taken several concrete measures across government health institutions to support senior citizens. Separate queues have been arranged for elderly persons at registration, OPD, laboratory and medicine distribution counters. In addition, dedicated geriatric clinics are being run in hospitals with the assistance of hospital attendants, while special health check-up camps are organised on the third Friday of every month at government health institutions, where medicines are distributed free of cost.

On the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, the Health Minister shared details of various programmes being implemented by the State Government for the better health, dignified living and improved care of senior citizens. She said that the State Government is working with the resolve of “Ageing with Dignity: Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons.”

Ms Arti Singh Rao said that comprehensive geriatric assessment of elderly persons is being carried out at all government health facilities. Physiotherapy facilities are also being provided at district civil hospitals, while consultations with specialist doctors are being made available through digital platforms such as e-Sanjeevani and telemedicine, enabling people to access these services from home.

The Health Minister urged senior citizens in the state to adopt a healthy lifestyle. She advised them to consume a nutritious and balanced diet, maintain cleanliness in their surroundings and regularly engage in light physical activities for healthy ageing. She also advised elderly persons to stay away from addictions such as tobacco, smoking and alcohol, undergo health check-ups from time to time, and take medicines regularly as advised by doctors.

Ms Arti Singh Rao also appealed to society and families to fulfil their responsibility towards senior citizens. She said that elderly persons should be kept engaged by introducing them to new activities, their advice should be sought, time should be spent with them, and family traditions and history should be discussed with them. She said that improving the quality of life of senior citizens requires promoting their participation, respect and appreciation in society.

She said citizens can contact their nearest government hospital for detailed information on health services.
